Bucks County Gets Extra $50K for Brownfields Redevelopment

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Vice President Al Gore awarded $150,000 to Bucks County yesterday to help the community redevelop its brownfields - abandoned, industrial properties where contamination has been a barrier to redevelopment. The Bucks County award is one of 56 across the country totaling $7.95 million.

This award is a supplement to an initial $200,000 brownfields grant that the EPA gave to Bucks County in April 1997. The county used the initial grant to establish an enterprise zone along the Delaware River in three towns, Bristol Township, Bristol Borough and Morrisville Borough -- where many former industrial properties formed the commercial base of the community. The supplemental grant will be used to extend the enterprise zone.

"The continuing success of the administration’s brownfields revitalization effort demonstrates that environmental protection and economic development can go hand-in-hand," said Gore.

During the past seven years, the Clinton-Gore administration has awarded more than 300 EPA brownfields grants to states, cities, towns and tribes throughout the nation totaling $69 million. Brownfields redevelopment grants empower communities, providing them with the start-up funds to assess and inventory properties in their jurisdiction that may be ripe for redevelopment.

These grants have helped to create more than 5,000 jobs and leveraged $25 of private and public investment for every $1 in grant money.
