1999 WASTEWISE PROGRAM AWARDS CEREMONY
EPA’s WasteWise program will honor partners that have achieved significant waste reduction results at its 1999 Awards and Recognition Ceremony at Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Phoenix Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. Thirteen organizations will be recognized as Partners of the Year for exceptional waste reduction programs including: Alden Central School, Alden, N.Y.; Blue Lake Rancheria, Blue Lake, Calif.; Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, N.Y.; Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Ill.; Guardian Industries, Ligonier, Ind.; Herman Miller Inc., Zeeland, Mich.; Schlegel Systems Inc., Rochester, N.Y.; Seydel Companies, Pendergrass, Ga.; Southern Mills Inc., Senoia, Ga.; State of Ohio, Columbus, Ohio; Tennessee Department of Correction, Nashville, Tenn.; U.S. Postal Service-Northeast Area, Windsor, Conn.; and Washoe County, Nev. EPA also will honor 20 Program Champions for their overall waste reduction achievements. EPA launched WasteWise in January 1994 as a voluntary partnership program to help businesses and institutions find practical methods for reducing municipal solid waste. This year 128 new partners joined, bringing the total number of partners to over 900. These partners are located in every state and span 50 industrial and non-industrial sectors. During the past five years these partners have reduced more than 26 million tons of municipal solid waste, thereby preventing the release of greenhouse gases by an estimated 19 million metric tons of carbon equivalent, which is equal to removing 14 million cars from the road in one year.
