EPA awards $8,840 to Indiana schools for water quality study

CHICAGO (Aug. 4, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has awarded an $8,840 environmental education grant to Springs Valley Community Schools, French Lick, Ind., for water quality studies on Lost River.

Students from various science classes will test water quality upstream and downstream of French Lick and West Baden to find out what effect human activities have on Lost River. Studies will measure dissolved oxygen, nitrate levels and turpidity. Lost River water will also be compared to Patoka Lake, another local source of drinking water.

The Indiana school district is among 16 organizations in the six-state region that received a total of $194,900 in environmental education grant money this year from EPA. More than 130 proposals were received from groups in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

EPA grants are awarded yearly under the National Environmental Education Act, which was passed in 1990 to stimulate environmental education through design, demonstration and communications projects conceived by local organizations.
