EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING ON UPPER 1 ½ MILE REACH OF HOUSATONIC RIVER

BOSTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is hosting an open house and public information meeting on Wednesday, October 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the basement auditorium of the Berkshire Athenaeum Library, 1 Wendell Ave. in Pittsfield, Mass., to discuss the next phase of cleanup for the Housatonic River.
This next phase of work, between Lyman and Elm Streets is called Phase One of 1 ½ Mile Reach. Eventually, the 1.5 Mile Reach cleanup will extend from Elm Street all the way to Fred Garner Park. Cleanup is anticipated to begin in Spring 2002, after GE completes the remediation of the Upper ½ Mile Reach.
The open house will take place between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. and the information meeting will be from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
EPA will update the public on the status of the Upper ½-Mile Reach and discuss the cleanup objectives and methods for the 1 ½ Mile Reach, including the construction schedule, work hours and coordination with GE's work in the 1 ½ Mile Reach to address floodplain contamination
