Cleanup Begins in Freedom, Maine Warehouse

(Boston, Mass. – December 12, 2007) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is moving forward to remove hazardous containers present at 28 Skidgel Lane in Freedom, Maine. The initial site inspections were a coordinated effort between the U.S. EPA and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

Solvents, thinners, pesticides and adhesives were found stored in significant quantities in a warehouse on the property as remnants left behind from a small family-run commercial and retail operation. The building was found to be dilapidated with unrestricted access and therefore posed a risk to human health from potential exposure.

EPA site investigators determined the containers should be removed immediately to prevent further exposure to harsh weather conditions, which could increase the likelihood that contaminants might be released from damaged containers. Such a release could threaten groundwater, nearby private wells, and Sandy Stream, a nearby recreational fishing area and important habitat for wildlife.

Work is expected to begin Monday, December 10. After locating, sampling and identifying the contents of the containers, EPA will dispose of the hazardous substances at an EPA approved disposal facility.

All parties involved are working to minimize any disruption to the local town while taking all possible measures to ensure the safety of nearby residents. The public is encouraged to respect work crews, signs and fencing to protect their health and to help keep the cleanup on schedule.
