HAZLETON, Pa. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will conduct a harmless smoke test this afternoon at the Hazle Township Yard on Route 940. The test will be used to determine the effectiveness of blowers workers will use to capture vapors when sewer construction begins at the Tranguch Gasoline site. The test will also determine whether sound baffles will be needed to reduce noise during the project.
During the test, EPA will set off a smoke device and observe the movement of the smoke as it is drawn through a blower. By observing the draw of the blower and its effect on the smoke, EPA engineers will be able to determine whether the blower is adequate to prevent vapors from escaping from the trench that will be dug to replace the sewer main on 22nd Street.
The test is tentatively scheduled to occur between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m today.
