KANAWHA MOTIVE POWER, Montgomery, Fayette County -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began emergency removal and off-site disposal of approximately 5,000 tons (250 truck loads) of lead-contaminated soil on Tuesday from this 3/4-acre Superfund site in Fayette County. A recent assessment performed at the site revealed an immediate threat to public health and the environment from lead contamination. Elevated levels of lead were found in soils, stream sediments and stream water. Located in a residential neighborhood, the abandoned facility was used to manufacture and repair industrial lead batteries. The site’s 8,000-square-foot building was leveled three years ago to facilitate earlier removal activities.
