PHILADELPHIA (April 29, 2010) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that Jeffrey Lape, director of the agency’s Chesapeake Bay Program Office in Annapolis, has accepted a position as deputy director of the Office of Science and Technology in EPA’s Office of Water in Washington, D.C.
“EPA and our Bay partners have undertaken significant initiatives to restore the Bay, including following through on the President's Executive Order,” said EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin. “In leading our efforts, Jeff has shown unparalleled focus, energy and a sense of purpose.”
Lape will manage EPA’s efforts to develop national standards and guidelines under the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act. The Office of Science and Technology also develops human health and ecological risk assessments and criteria.
James Edward, currently deputy director of the Bay program, will serve as acting director when Lape begins his new position May 23.
“I’m confident that Jim will vigorously continue the agency’s and partners’ efforts to restore the Bay,” said Garvin.
