REPORT ON COMBUSTION WASTES FROM FOSSIL FUELS
A report was delivered to Congress on March 31 about the adverse health and environmental effects of the disposal and use of combustion wastes from utilities and non-utilities that burn fossil fuels. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Section 8002(o) directed EPA to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the sources and volume of generated materials; present and alternative disposal practices and the potential dangers to public health or the environment. The report also addresses management of various coal, petroleum coke, oil and natural gas combustion wastes, including disposal and beneficial uses of the wastes. EPA will make a regulatory determination after holding a public hearing in late May to accept and review public comments. Further information about the hearing will be published soon in the Federal Register. Copies of the Executive Summary and the Report to Congress will be available the week of April 12 at: https://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/osw/special.htm or by calling the RCRA/Superfund Hotline at 1-800-424-9346 or 703-412-9810.
