WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $2.6 million grant to Lycoming County to help pay for a comprehensive study of the combined sewers in the Williamsport area.

The study is expected to lead to lower sewer bills and improve water quality for residents of Williamsport, Old Lycoming Township, South Williamsport Borough, Duboistown Borough, and Loyalsock Township.

“This is an important step toward eliminating the occasional discharge of raw sewage into the West Branch of the Susquehanna River from old sewer systems that mix human sewage with storm water runoff and then spills into the river,” said Bradley M. Campbell, EPA’s mid-Atlantic regional administrator.

Lycoming County will use the grant to study wastewater from four adjacent sewer authorities that is treated at facilities owned by the Williamsport Sanitary Authority. Discharge data will be reviewed, and all sanitary and storm sewers will be mapped using a Geographical Information System mapping system.

The final evaluation report will provide all system municipalities with a guidebook and a prioritized list of strategies for reducing sewer overflows.

The grant will pay for 95 percent of the $2.7 million study. Lycoming County will provide the five percent local cost share. The study is expected to be completed by March 2005.
