EPA awards $438,900 to upgrade Sistersville water treatment system

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $438,900 grant to the city of Sistersville, Tyler County, W. Va. to help pay for upgrading the city’s water treatment plant and drinking water system.

“Replacement of the old, inadequate drinking water system will assure Sistersville residents that they will have a safe, reliable source of drinking water, which is important in protecting public health,” said Donald S. Welsh, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The project includes construction of new groundwater wells, a new drinking water treatment plant, and replacing water lines along Virginia Terrace and Klondike Avenue, which are more than 110 years old. The new groundwater wells will provide a source of raw water that requires less treatment than the current source of surface water.

The grant will pay for about 40 percent of the project and the city will pay the balance.
