EPA to Finalize Drinking Water Protection Rules
Contact: Dale Kemery, 202-564-4355/ [email protected]
What: At a teleconference EPA will discuss finalizing two drinking water protection rules. One reduces the risk of disease-carrying microorganisms from entering water supplies. The second requires water systems to take actions to minimize the presence of contaminants known as disinfection byproducts that can form when water is disinfected to remove microorganisms.
The rules are important public health measures that will decrease the incidence of illnesses caused by microbial contaminants and reduce potential health risks from disinfection byproducts in drinking water. The rules represent the final phase in a rulemaking strategy required by Congress as part of the 1996 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Who: Stephen L. Johnson, administrator, U.S. EPA
When: 1:30 p.m. EST, Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005
