PA EPA ENDORSES NATION'S 1ST 4 STATE GROUND WATER PRO. PROGRA
FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1994
EPA ENDORSES NATION'S FIRST FOUR STATE GROUND WATER
PROTECTION PROGRAMS
EPA has endorsed the nation's first four comprehensive ground water protection programs voluntarily developed by the states of Alabama, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Wisconsin. The programs detail what steps each state is taking to ensure that ground and drinking water resources are protected. EPA encourages comprehensive ground water protection programs, reflecting the Agency's priority of preventing pollution over addressing contamination later. All states are urged to develop such programs in accordance with EPA's ground water protection guidance issued in l993. The programs are considered "core" or basic programs as a beginning effort and can be expanded toward fully integrating programs. EPA works with each state through the annual planning process. The endorsements were made by EPA's regional administrators in Region l (Conn., N.H.); Region 4 (Ala.) and Region 5 (Wisc.). For further information call: Region 1: Jane Downing, 617-565-3655; Region 4: Mary Kay Lynch, 404-347-3379, ext 6607; Region 5: Jerri-Anne Garl, 312-353-1441.
