Perry County’s Shermans Creek Conservation Association Awarded Environmental Education Grant

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced 20 environmental education grants awarded throughout the mid-Atlantic region. In ShermansDale, Pennsylvania EPA awarded $5,242 to the Shermans Creek Conservation Association.

The program, which EPA is funding is called Linking Communities, School Students, and a Local College together through a Local Watershed in Perry County.

The goal of the project is to expand community educational outreach and to connect students with environmental challenges facing their local community and world. A district-wide approach to science will be instituted that will include laboratory investigations, analyzation of environmental data in the community, and participation in town meetings. Workshops for this program will be coordinated through Dickinson College’s Environmental Studies Department in conjunction with the West Perry School District.

“We are proud to support this program, which will help students in Perry County understand important local environmental challenges,” said mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh.

Since 1992, EPA has provided more than $2 million annually in funding to local organizations and schools and has awarded a total of 1,700 grants. These grass-roots grants fund educational programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
