WEYERHAEUSER PULP MILL COMPLETES FIRST YEAR IN XL PROGRAM
Marking the first anniversary of the innovative EPA regulatory effort called Project XL at the Weyerhaeuser Flint River pulp mill in Oglethorpe, Ga., EPA Deputy Administrator Fred Hansen, Weyerhauser Executives and staff and public officials assessed its accomplishments on Jan. 28. The major product produced there is fluff pulp, the absorbent component used in the manufacture of diapers. The plant is a state-of-the-art facility using less water than most similar pulp mills and is a model for EPA’s proposed best management practices for the industry. Results of the XL program show overall pollution reductions in one year in solid waste by 41%, wastewater emissions by 32%, and air emissions by 13%. Project XL is a program created to achieve superior environmental results beyond that which can be accomplished by the normal regulatory system.
