EPA provides $470,500 grant for Big Beaver sewers

PHILADELPHIA -- The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a
$470,500 grant to Big Beaver, Beaver County, Pa for a sewer improvement project that includes extending a sewage line from the Beaver Falls sanitary sewage system to serve residents and businesses in Big Beaver.

“EPA believes that projects like this will improve water quality and living conditions, making for a healthier environment and better quality of life,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The project, which also includes making modifications to two pump stations in Big Beaver, will convey sewage to the Koppel Wastewater Treatment Plant in Beaver Falls and allow development along State Route 60. It will also help alleviate sewage drainage problems from on-lot wastewater disposal systems.

The major watershed in the project area is the Stockman Run drainage shed. Stockman Run flows into the Beaver River, which is a sub-drainage basin of the Ohio River. The soils in this area are listed as having moderate to severe limitations for the use of on-lot wastewater disposal and as such, sewage disposal is a common problem to these drainage areas.

The EPA grant will pay 55 percent of the eligible portion of the project costs. The balance of the project is being funded with local funds.
