EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING THE BARBER ORCHARD SUPERFUND SITE IN WAYNESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting in Waynesville, North Carolina on Thursday, May 1, 2003 regarding the Barber Orchard Superfund site. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the District Court Annex (old Dayco Union Hall) on Hendrix Street.
EPA officials will discuss the results of soil and groundwater sampling conducted as a part of the Remedial Investigation during 2002. Also, EPA officials will be available to provide information, answer questions, and address other concerns regarding the site. All interested persons are encouraged to attend. The Barber Orchard site is located approximately 3 miles west of Waynesville and consists of approximately 438 acres. This property was used as an apple orchard from 1903 to the mid 1980's when the orchard went bankrupt. In the late 1980's the land was parceled off and sold for residential development. Contaminants of concern include: arsenic and lead in the soil and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD), Lindane and other pesticides in the groundwater. The site was placed on the National Priority List in September 2001. |
