(Chicago -Feb. 27, 2008) EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson will honor Judith Norton Boggess from Lake Forest, Ill., with the President's Volunteer Service Award today (Wednesday, Feb. 27), at the Cannon House Caucus Room in the U. S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. About 290 members of the Garden Club of America will witness the presentation for Mrs. Boggess' leadership in helping to restore and preserve Market Square, the first shopping center in the United States, designed in 1913 in the Chicago suburb of Lake Forest.
Described as someone who raises voluntarism to a professional level, Mrs. Boggess is a tireless advocate for conservation by working to educate the public about environmental issues facing this country as well as arranging for speakers and organizing conferences. In April 2006 Mrs. Boggess was instrumental in setting up a very successful Global Warming Conference in Chicago that attracted 400 participants. She volunteered as the former national conservation chairperson and also national affairs and legislation chair for the Garden Club of America.
"Today we honor Judith Norton Boggess for answering President Bush's call to serve a cause greater than herself," said Johnson. "Dedicated volunteers like Judy Boggess are inspiring others to join them in conserving, preserving and educating others so our world will be a better place in future years."
During his travels across the country, Johnson meets with individuals like Judy Boggess who are answering the call to volunteer service, environmental education, conservation and pollution prevention.
