EPA reaches agreement with M & M Drying

CHICAGO (June 15, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has reached an agreement with M & M Drying Ltd. on alleged clean-air violations at the company's former aluminum recovery plant at 4125 Mahoning Road N.E., Canton, Ohio. EPA assessed a $25,000 penalty, and the company agreed to do an environmental project costing $330,000.

Since the date of the alleged violations, M & M Drying has moved its plant to Minerva, Ohio.

"For its environmental project, M & M Drying will buy and clean up a parcel of land next to its current plant in Minerva that was formerly used and allegedly contaminated by another company," said Acting Regional Administrator Bharat Mathur.

The agreement resolves EPA allegations that M & M Drying failed to test for dioxins and furans at its thermal chip dryer.

There is evidence that dioxins and furans may cause liver damage and probably cause cancer in humans, and furans may cause cancer in humans.
