Borough of Tyrone Receives $760,200 Grant From EPA

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $760,200 grant to Borough of Tyrone, Blair County, Pa. to help pay for new water lines that will enhance fire protection in areas of Tyrone and Snyder Township.

“Public safety is protected when communities can maintain adequate pressure and volume in their water distribution systems to meet critical fire flow needs. It is EPA’s job to support local officials in this important effort,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The borough recently constructed a new water filtration plant and water storage tanks to provide a greater capacity to meet fire flow needs. Many areas of the distribution system were identified as lacking adequate capacity to provide the necessary pressure and volume to meet those needs.

This project will replace about 11,500 feet of two-, four-, and six-inch water lines with eight-inch lines to increase water pressure and meet fire flow needs. Fire hydrants and valves will also be replaced to further improve the fire flow.

The grant will pay for 55 percent of the project’s $1,382,000 eligible construction costs.
